Being green and fair…
At Mamatotowear we believe in Good Karma. We think it’s important to really think about the consequences of our decisions, and deciding to think organic, fair made and global was an easy choice for us.
Most clothes that we wear have traveled around the world if not a few times so probably once, from the place the crop was harvested, to an area where it’s prepared, then on to be spun, knitted, sewn, printed, packaged, distributed, sold etc. (If they really need to travel shouldn’t we at least get to wear the clothes doing it?) It’s a long line before it ends up in our closets. We use both conventional and organic materials to give our customers a wider choice in terms of colors and materials. And we don’t feel that there is yet a good enough way to dye non toxic enough for it to make sense to use organic materials with color. Mamatotowear aims to and will soon be all organic and we are very open to new Eco Friendly materials such as Hemp, Bamboo and Seaweed, all directions that are possibilities for us. We do make sure our conventional fabric comes from the US, to make sure there are laws and regulations practiced to protect the people and environment where it is produced.
We also think it’s important to support the local community and business. In order to do that and also make sure we know our clothes are made by consenting adults earning a fair wage, we hire local seamstresses at a sewing factory in the city of San Francisco. San Francisco’s minimum wage is $9.14 per hour, the highest in the United States and possibly the world. All the printing involved in creating our clothes is also done locally in San Francisco by a company that employs recovering drug addicts and homeless people.
Everyone who is in touch with our company and our products earn fair wages and contribute happy, positive energy to our clothes, and we think that brings you a better product. With our tiny contribution in the world we wish more companies would think about the possibilities of their decisions.
